Deworming in dogs and cats

You may not often think about it, but worm infections occur frequently in dogs and cats. Because symptoms are not always clearly visible, an infection can sometimes remain unnoticed for a long period.

Therefore, it is important to deworm your pet regularly, even when you do not see any symptoms.

Why is deworming important?

Worms are parasites that live inside your pet’s body, usually in the intestines. There, they feed on the nutrients your animal needs. As a result, your pet may absorb fewer nutrients.

In addition, some worm species can also be contagious to humans. Regular deworming is therefore not only important for the health of your pet, but also for your own health and that of your family.

How does my pet become infected?

Dogs and cats can contract a worm infection in several ways, for example by:

  • Eating infected prey
  • Contact with infected feces
  • Via the mother (in puppies and kittens)

Because these situations occur frequently in daily life, the risk of infection is relatively high.

Symptoms of worms

A worm infection does not always present clear symptoms. Possible signs to watch for include:

  • Diarrhea or inconsistent stool
  • Weight loss or, conversely, a bloated abdomen
  • A dull or less shiny coat
  • Scooting (itching around the anus)

Do you notice one or more of these symptoms? Please contact the veterinarian for advice.

Preventative deworming

Because worm infections often go unnoticed, we advise preventative deworming several times a year. How often this is necessary depends on the age and lifestyle of your pet.

Dog

Puppies

  • Every 2 weeks until the age of 10 weeks
  • Thereafter every month until 6 months of age

From 6 months

  • 4 times per year (approximately every 3 months)

Cat

Kittens

  • At 3, 5, 7, and 9 weeks of age
  • Thereafter every month until 6 months of age

Adult cats

  • Indoor cat: 2 to 4 times per year
  • Outdoor cat: 4 times per year

Does your cat regularly catch birds or mice? In that case, monthly deworming may be advisable.

How can you deworm?

Deworming can be done easily with tablets or spot-on (topical) products. It is important to do this regularly, even when your pet has no symptoms.
