Because symptoms are not always clearly visible, an infection can sometimes remain unnoticed for a long period. <\/p>\n\n<p>Therefore, it is important to deworm your pet regularly, even when you do not see any symptoms.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Why is deworming important?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Worms are parasites that live inside your pet&#8217;s body, usually in the intestines. There, they feed on the nutrients your animal needs. As a result, your pet may absorb fewer nutrients.  <\/p>\n\n<p>In addition, some worm species can also be <strong>contagious to humans<\/strong>. Regular deworming is therefore not only important for the health of your pet, but also for your own health and that of your family. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>How does my pet become infected?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Dogs and cats can contract a worm infection in several ways, for example by:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eating infected prey<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact with infected feces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Via the mother (in puppies and kittens)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Because these situations occur frequently in daily life, the risk of infection is relatively high.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Symptoms of worms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>A worm infection does not always present clear symptoms. Possible signs to watch for include: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Diarrhea or inconsistent stool<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weight loss or, conversely, a bloated abdomen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A dull or less shiny coat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scooting (itching around the anus)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Do you notice one or more of these symptoms? Please contact the veterinarian for advice. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Preventative deworming<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Because worm infections often go unnoticed, we advise <strong>preventative deworming several times a year<\/strong>. How often this is necessary depends on the age and lifestyle of your pet. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Dog<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Puppies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Every 2 weeks until the age of 10 weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thereafter every month until 6 months of age<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>From 6 months<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>4 times per year (approximately every 3 months)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Cat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Kittens<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At 3, 5, 7, and 9 weeks of age<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thereafter every month until 6 months of age<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"605\" height=\"909\" src=\"https:\/\/zoobijzonder.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zoobijzonder.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-1.jpeg 605w, https:\/\/zoobijzonder.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-1-200x300.jpeg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>Adult cats<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Indoor cat: 2 to 4 times per year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Outdoor cat: 4 times per year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Does your cat regularly catch birds or mice? In that case, <strong>monthly deworming<\/strong> may be advisable. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>How can you deworm?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Deworming can be done easily with tablets or spot-on (topical) products.
