Harrison’s pellets temporarily unavailable – what does this mean for your parakeet or parrot?

Door Karolien

In recent weeks, we at Zoo Bijzonder Veterinary Clinic have received many questions from concerned bird owners:
“Harrison’s is no longer available anywhere, what now?”

First of all: do not panic. Your bird is not in immediate danger, but it is important to handle this situation wisely.

Why are Harrison’s pellets so popular?

Harrison’s pellets are known as one of the most complete feeds for parrots and parakeets. In contrast to seed mixtures, pellets contain:

  • a balanced composition of nutrients
  • sufficient vitamins and minerals
  • less chance of selective eating behavior

Seed mixtures may seem attractive, but many birds only eat their favorite seeds — resulting in nutritional deficiencies.

Why is Harrison’s currently difficult to obtain?

At the moment, we see that Harrison’s is temporarily sold out at many Dutch suppliers. This is likely related to:

  • import and distribution issues from the United States
  • stricter regulations regarding animal ingredients
  • limited stock at European importers

It is therefore not a quality issue, but a logistical challenge.

What can you do if your bird eats Harrison’s?

1. Stay with the same feed if possible

Suddenly changing diet can cause stress and health problems.

Good news:
We currently still have a limited stock of Harrison’s pellets available through a European supplier.

➡️ Please feel free to contact us regarding availability or reservations.

2. Do you have to switch? Do so gradually

Slowly mix the new feed into the old:

  • days 1–3: 75% old / 25% new
  • days 4–7: 50% / 50%
  • day 8+: further reduce old feed

Pay close attention to:

  • appetite
  • weight
  • droppings

3. In doubt? Let us assist you

Every bird is different. Age, species, and health play a major role.

We therefore offer:

  • personalized nutritional advice
  • guidance during the transition
  • monitoring of weight and condition

Important: avoid panic changes

We understand that it is stressful when a trusted feed suddenly becomes difficult to obtain. However, a rushed transition is often riskier than searching for a proper solution.

In conclusion

We are closely monitoring the situation regarding Harrison’s. As long as necessary, we will help our clients find a suitable solution: either with Harrison’s or a responsible alternative.
